BEYONCE AND OTHER FEMALE ARTISTS DOMINATE MUSIC NODS FOR 2021 NAACP IMAGE AWARDS


Female artists swept all five nominations in the key category of outstanding soul/ or and R&B song.

Female artists dominated the nominations in the recording categories for the 2021 NAACP Image Awards, which were announced on Tuesday (Feb. 2). Beyoncé led with six nods, followed by Ledisi with Unordered List Change five, and H.E.R., Chloe x Halle and Alicia Keys, with four each. The top male nominees were Big Sean, Drake and PJ Morton, who each had three nods, as did Jhené Aiko. No other artist received more than two nods in recording categories in this, the Image Awards' 52nd year. Female artists swept all five nominations in the key category of outstanding soul/R&B song.

Beyoncé is the top nominee for the 63rd annual Grammy Awards, which will be presented on March 14. Several Grammy nominees in key categories were also nominated here. Aiko’s Chilombo, a surprise Grammy nominee for album of the year, is nominated for outstanding album here. Chika, Doja Cat and D Smoke, Grammy nominees for best new artist. Beyoncé’s “Black Parade,” Grammy-nominated for record and song of the year, is nominated here for outstanding soul/R&B song, as is H.E.R.’s “I Can’t Breathe,” which is Grammy-nominated for song of the year. Jon Batiste is a double nominee for his work on the Disney/Pixar film Soul. He shares a nomination for outstanding soundtrack/compilation album with Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross and Tom MacDougall. Batiste also has a nod for outstanding jazz album for his Soul music.



Here Are All the Winners From the 2020 NAACP Image Awards

Drake has two nods for outstanding hip-hop rap song -- “Laugh Now, Cry Later” and “Life Is Good,” a Collab with Future. Other artists who have two nominations in a given category are Beyoncé, and Buju Banton, Original Koffee and Tiwa Savage (all in outstanding international song). Nominees for entertainer of the year are rapper D-Nice, actress and director Regina King, actress Viola Davis, TV host Trevor Noah and entertainment mogul Tyler Perry. This is the latest in a series of nominations and awards for D-Nice, who began hosting Home-school at Club Quarantine on Instagram Live in March 2020 to help people cope with the COVID-19 crisis. D-Nice won a 2020 Webby Award for special achievement. He was also one of the honourees for the Shine A Light Award at the 2020 BET Awards.

Nominees for the social justice impact award are April Ryan, Debbie Allen, Lebron James, Stacey Abrams and Tamika Mallory. The 52nd NAACP Image Awards will be simulcast on March 27 at 8 p.m. ET across Viacom CBS Networks, which includes BET, CBS, MTV, VH1, MTV2, BET HER and LOGO. This will mark the show's national broadcast premiere on CBS. Awards are presented in 16 recording categories, as well as additional categories in television & streaming, literature, motion pictures, documentaries, writing and directing.
